Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration by Ah’Janee Dunston & Rashel Medina

This year's Hispanic Heritage Celebration started off big with its grand opening on Thursday, September 19th, at the Paterson campus’ Paterson Room. This was an opportunity to share and celebrate Hispanic culture with students on campus. We received around 50 students and served empanadas, and drinks from some Hispanic countries, and had a kahoot game where students were able to win prizes like a speaker. Overall, the opening event was well received among students, and many said they enjoyed the event.

We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in between our opening and closing events at our other two campuses, the WAC (Wanaque) and the PAC (Passaic). At our WAC campus, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, October 3rd, in the WAC Lobby. During this event, we offered food, drinks, and sweets from Hispanic culture. While enjoying the delicious food, students were also notified about upcoming events we have and were given more information about the Student Government Association (SGA). We want to give a

special shoutout to Ariel Molina (SPC Member) and Connor Guzman (SGA Senator) for their hard work and dedication for also helping out. This event had around 27 students who attended it. Despite the fact that there were few students at the Hispanic Heritage celebration on the WAC campus, everyone still had a great time with smiles and great conversations.

At our PAC campus, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, October 2nd, in the PAC lobby. Even though this campus has our nursing students and their busy schedules, we managed to have around 40 students attend this event. Even though we may not be able to be as active on this campus as our other two campuses, we still love to include our beautiful Passaic campus.

The closing event was just as great as the opening event. This time instead of a kahoot game, we collaborated with the Wellness Department to bring in a professional Bachata dancer to bring a little bit of the Hispanic culture over to students on campus. Many students, including faculty, joined in and learned how to dance bachata along with enjoying the refreshments that we served. This ambiance transported everyone to a lively Hispanic fiesta, where the rhythm of the music made it irresistible to ease into the dance floor, smile, and

laugh.

These events proved that celebrating and sharing Hispanic heritage is very important in order to not only share but pass down this very important culture because the only way to keep it alive is by sharing it with others. This is especially important at our college, where around 57% of the student body population is of Hispanic/Latino descent. So let's continue to join forces and together create a more vibrant community where everyone appreciates each other's cultures and traditions, ensuring that our heritage shines brightly for the generations to come.
