Your Voice Matters: Insights from the 2024 SGA Fall Town Hall by SGA Speaker Elizabeth Ramos

As your Student Government Association (SGA) Speaker, I had the honor of organizing and hosting our Fall Town Hall, an event designed to showcase what SGA is doing for students and to give an insight into the behind-the-scenes of how we try to make positive changes at our college. The Town Hall serves as a reminder that your voices matter to us and that we are committed to building a stronger community...within our Community College!

This year we hosted the Town Hall on December 5th from 1:10 pm to 2:10 pm. But I began planning this all at the end of September, figuring out what is happening right now that our

students must be informed about. After SGA’s monthly with President Rose, I learned that facilities were going to get put to work! And that we were going to have cool additions to our school that would help our students, so asking Brian Egan, who is the Vice President of Facilities, as our first guest speaker to share details about these changes and how they will benefit the students

Then throughout the fall semester, SGA has paired up with Phi Theta Kappa’s college project: the EaRN Consortium, whose main goal is to ensure that when students graduate from Passaic County Community College, they are ready to go into a career and within the Consortium, the members created a survey to see where students are with being career ready. This was such an amazing project to share with the students, so to bring in 2

administrators who are members of this Consortium, Dr. Susan Gaulden and Tom Moore, and to have Cristy Sarmiento, who is a student herself, to share her perspective on why the survey is vital and encourage her peers to participate.

On the day of the event, we handed out goodie bags with candy canes and chocolates, and then the meeting began introducing your 2024-20205, followed by our Fall report which summarized our semester's accomplishments. Next, our guest speakers took the stage to talk about their respective topics. Then it all ended with a very fun giveaway where two students at our Paterson Campus won beat headphones and a digital camera! Then in our Passaic Campus, two students won a Stanley and an Owala!

Overall, it was such a pleasure to do this year's Town Hall. I hope it gave students a clear view of our dedication to serving the college community and I cannot wait to see you all at our Town Hall meeting in the Spring Semester
